No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
