This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
